Automated Multi-Wavelength Analysis of the Blazar Mrk 421
Abstract
Blazars are still mysterious objects and display partially unexplained phenomena such as flares. In order to improve understanding of these objects, it is essential to monitor them frequently and utilize long-term data. Being the closest and brightest blazar at high energy, the BL Lac Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) is one of the most monitored blazars in the sky. More than a decade of data from current world-class telescopes is now available. Unfortunately, the data are dispersed, making it difficult to apprehend its multiwavelength behavior shortly after observation. We are developing a tool that will make Mrk 421 data more accessible to the scientific community while also allowing a more comprehensive multiwavelength analysis. This tool will help trigger further observations after flares are observed. We ping NASA and VERITAS databases daily and query new data pertaining to Mrk 421 at multiple energy ranges from Swift-XRT, Fermi-LAT, and VERITAS. We then run analyses, produce spectra and combine them to build a multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED). All our results are available on a dedicated webpage that we are preparing to make accessible to the public. We plan to glean new science from this vast dataset via statistical analyses and multiwavelength modeling.
